Angels Care School

Education for refugee children

Angels Care School serves the children of the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement and Uganda locals. 80% of our students are refugees and 20% are Ugandan students, with currently over 1,000 students and 20 teachers.

In 2011, the Ugandan government issued a formal document recognizing the exemplary work that Angels Care School does for the Kyaka II settlement.

For refugee children, education is paramount to building their future. For young girls, the classroom provides safety, protection from early childhood marriage, and cultivates their leadership skills. For young boys, education teaches diligence and discipline, engages them in teamwork and cooperation through extracurriculars, and gives them opportunities to serve their community. Education gives refugee children hope that they can accomplish their dreams and have a stable future, even in the midst of grave circumstances.

Angels Care School educates refugee children so that they can be the leaders of tomorrow. Many of our graduates have gone on to become teachers and doctors, many returning to Angels Care as staff.

ACS has both a nursery school and an elementary school from Kindergarten to Primary 7. On average there are 120 children per class with one to two teachers.

Students at Angels Care School receive the best education in the settlement and have had the best marks in their national tests.

Continued needs for Angels Care School:

Teachers.

Education wouldn’t happen without dedicated educators. We all know that a good teacher in your formative school-age years can directly impact the trajectory of your life. A loving teacher who inspires and recognizes potential in their students can foster confidence, dreams, and leadership skills.

At Angels Care School, there are approximately one to two teachers per classroom of 100 students.

We are unable to pay teachers a competitive wage to the government and settlement schools. Our teachers love and are dedicated to our students, but this comes with challenges.

Our hope is to be able to increase our teacher’s wages, build staff housing, and hire more teachers.

Classrooms.

With the refugee population in Kyaka II ever-increasing, our student body is growing. By expanding our classrooms and buildings, we could continue to admit students from the refugee community. At the moment, our classroom size is too small to accommodate the growing student body.

We aim to raise enough money to build another 6 classrooms, helping us to meet the student to teacher ration government standard of 45:1.
